19-10-2009 ENGINEERED BY EWO: LED-SYSTEM MODULE DS31

The full potential of the LED technology can only be fully utilised if high-quality components are used to achieve optimal performance of the system.

In order to achieve the required objectives for light distribution, ewo relies on an extensively developed light-steering system: the precision optics which are placed on top of the LED are exceptional in that their dimensions measure 49mm x 30mm. The larger the optical area, the more accurate the resulting light distribution.

This is also confirmed by the test results: The values of total symmetry and longitudinal symmetry of 0.4 / 0.7 respectively are achieved and the glare effect in all classifications is significantly below the Ti-value of 10%, while the SR-values are above 0.5. The lens is designed in such a way, that light radiation in the upper half of the space is completely avoided and thus the risk of light pollution is eliminated.

The consistency in the development can be seen in the attention to detail. To prevent the efficiency of the optical system being impaired, the individual modules have a protection degree of IP67. Additional glass or plastic covers, which would cause a transmission loss of between 8% and 12%, are not required.

The LEDs used for this system are the CREE XP-E, with a performance of 1.2W (power of 350mA) and distinguish themselves by a precisely defined emission characteristic of 120° and a light power of 114 lm/LED. The module is configured in such a way that it can also be powered with 700mA. The power output of 2.3W provides a luminous flux of approximately 194 lm/LED. In addition to the cool white (6000K) colour version there is also a warm white (3000K) option which allows the fine tuning of the system in order for it to harmonize with the individual areas of application in the best possible manner.

The heat which is generated on the reverse side of the chip is allowed to dissipate via the metal core circuit through to the carefully dimensioned heat sink. The system has been designed in such a way that even if exposed to high surrounding temperatures and being operated at 700mA the limits prescribed by the LED manufacturer are not exceeded.

The high-quality components are constructed as individual modules each consisting of three LEDs. The decision to pursue a modular configuration can be explained on the basis of the advantages such a system offers: Individual modules allow the components to be partially substituted thus avoiding the replacement of the entire system. Infinitely variable adjustment of the power due to the modular configuration ensures that only the energy required by the norm is used and no unnecessary light is produced. What ewo ultimately offers lighting manufacturers is a tool which is designed to allow for maximum flexibility when creating and shaping a luminaire.

The module will be available in a number of versions from mid-November and will for example offer different optics in order for it to be used for the lighting of public open spaces, footpaths and cycle ways.
