MUSEUM DER BAYERISCHEN KÖNIGE, HOHENSCHWANGAU

The Museum of the Bavarian Kings, located in the village of Hohenschwangau near the town of Füssen, opened in September of 2011. Volker Staab’s architectural firm, Staab Architekten, was responsible for the conversion of the building, formerly the Hotel Alpenrose. The main feature that sets the project apart is the new roof structure above the single-storey connecting building, which was the dining room of the original building. In addition to the exhibition spaces and a hotel on the upper floors, a restaurant was built on the ground floor with a large outdoor area, situated directly on the shores of the Alpsee Lake.

The landscape architects at realgrün were responsible for the design of the exterior space, including the entrance of the museum and the terrace in front of the hotel as well as the restaurant. The main goal was to create landscaping that was as understated as possible within this dramatic setting. Blocks about 50 centimeters in height made from Nagelflue, a type of conglomerate rock that is typical of Upper Bavarian and has strong granularity, were used for the terrace design and boundary of the public transport area. ewo supported realgrün in lighting this area. The luminaries, which ewo made especially for this project, were integrated into the low walls and flush-fitted with a cover made from architectural bronze. They give bi-directional illumination, accentuating the terrace and the street with a warm, white color temperature.

The Museum of the Bavarian Kings was awarded the 2013 German Architecture Prize, the 2013 Architecture Prize of the Association of German Architects (BDA) in the Bavaria Category (Perfection in the Details), the 2012 German Steel Construction Prize and the 2013 artouro (Bavarian Tourism Architecture Award).
