CAMPUS ETH, ZURICH

The ETH Zürich campus "Hönggerberg" is a wide-ranging educational institution quarter with an urban structure. It is considered a venue that serves as an interface between science, the economy and the general public – an urban quarter in which students, researchers and visitors are able to meet and realise new ideas.

In order to ensure that the visual qualities of this prestigious place are also brought to bear at night, the light design office “nachtaktiv” has developed a light concept that completely fulfils requirements while utilising only a minimum level of light intensity. Subdued light elements, clearly defined “portions of light” and even darkness itself serve as mediums to create an advantageous staging of light that increases both the level of safety and orientation, as well as a sense of comfort and social quality in outdoor areas.

ewo has developed a family of lamps, consisting of mast lamps and various sized bollard lamps, especially for the project. Thanks to a precise direction of light and the latest LED technology, the lamps are distinguished by both an extremely low level of light pollution and minimised energy consumption (savings of up to 90%). The new lighting technology is mercury-free, hardly affects nocturnal insects and blends harmonically into the landscape of Hönggerberg Hill.
